Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Soissons and its surroundings

Soissons is a town in Picardy located just 105km to the north-east of Paris, and the history and culture of this town make it a fascinating place to visit. Soissons is proud of its heritage, and there is certainly much to be seen here! A good place to start is at the Cathédrale Saint Gervais et Saint Protais, a stunning 11th-century building which contains one of Ruben's works, so keep an eye out for it. Just around the corner is the equally impressive Abbaye Saint-Jean-des-Vignes, which was also built in the 11th century, and was one of the richest abbeys in the Middle Ages. If you'd like to find out more about the abbey and more of the general history of Soissons, make sure to visit the Centre d'Interprétation de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (Architecture and Heritage Discovery Centre).

You might like to visit the Musée Municipal de Soissons too, which is home to a great collection of local artefacts and archaeological items as well as paintings. 30km down the road in the commune of La Ferté Milon is the Musée Jean Racine, which is housed in the building where he spent his childhood. This holds a very interesting collection of artefacts from his life and from the area, and is a fun trip for an afternoon. Don't forget to try some of the local cuisine while you're here! Some Picardy dishes include caghuse, made of pork and onions in vinegar and white wine, and rissoles des Sires de Coucy, which are delicious parcels of fish or minced meat wrapped in pastry. Enjoy your stay at the Premiere Classe SOISSONS!
